Emily Dickinson was born on Decem , in Amherst, Massachusetts. While she was extremely prolific as a poet and regularly enclosed poems in letters to friends, she was not publicly recognized during her lifetime. She died in Amherst in , and the first volume of her work was published posthumously in Contests include a"National Poetry Anthology" contest, a "Young Poets" contest, and a "Local Poem" contest, among others. One day I came across a book of poetry on a shelf in the college library. I read it, liked it, and began to write poems of my own. I enrolled in my first poetry-writing class in I was twenty years old at the time. That's when I decided to become a writer. I graduated from the university with a degree in English.   I was obsessed with the Silver Jews, the band Berman wrote and sang for, and when one of my co-workers gave me his book of poems, I devoured it over and over again.

  The last poem in the book is called "To Lissa. No kidding." "It was one of the last poems I wrote, and I hesitated about whether to include it," Kenney says. "My wife and I .
